Kasama

Kasama Chocolate, founded in 2015 by four friends in Vancouver (Vincent, Stefan, Oliver, and Dominik), draws its name from the Filipino word for friendship and collaboration—values at the heart of their mission. The company’s connection to the Philippines goes beyond its name. In 2022, Kasama partnered with the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Sustainable Food Systems to launch a sustainable cacao planting project in the northern Philippines near the Sierra Madre mountains. In 2024 the team started planting cacao with the goal of supporting local Filipino farmers and promoting transparency and sustainable agriculture, making a meaningful impact both in the Philippines and in the chocolate world.

Black Jaguar

Scott and Emilie’s journey began with the filming of an agroforestry documentary to promote sustainable and socially equitable farming systems. In the Amazon Basin of Bolivia, they encountered cacao trees and planted their first cacao seedlings. They then traveled through cacao-growing regions in Latin America, eventually arriving in Nicaragua’s largest and most biodiverse rainforest. There, they worked with a cocoa distributor focused on preserving genetic biodiversity and ensuring fair compensation for farmers. Still nurturing these connections, they founded Black Jaguar in Port Alberni, where they also forage on Vancouver Island, creating unique bars that blend the flavours of their past travels and present home.

Wallace

Mark Wallace’s unique journey in the world of chocolate began with years spent working alongside cocoa farmers in the West African jungle, a rare experience that shaped his deep understanding of cacao. After returning to Victoria, he launched Wallace Chocolate, crafting fine specialty chocolate using only his own in-house made chocolate from ethically sourced beans. In addition to chocolate making, Mark works as a responsible supply chain consultant, leading projects in agriculture, infrastructure, and renewable energy across Africa. His work emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation—principles that resonate deeply with Canadian ideals.

A Global Perspective, A Local Commitment

MILOU Chocolate was founded on the belief that chocolate is one of the most profound ways to connect with the world. Every bar tells a story—reflecting the landscapes that shaped its flavour, and the hands that brought it to life. It’s an invitation to explore, to taste, and to appreciate the interconnectedness of our world.

But as much as MILOU is about discovering the world, it is also about recognizing the importance of local. The beauty of chocolate is that it embodies both: a global ingredient transformed by local artisans, often enriched with local flavours.

Now, more than ever, we see the need to strengthen those local ties. That’s why MILOU is shifting its focus to celebrate the local chocolate makers in our own community while staying true to our global roots.

As part of this initiative:

  • All Canadian-made bars will be on sale to encourage people to discover the incredible craftsmanship of chocolate makers right here in Canada.
  • We’re releasing a special "BC Coast Crafted" Explorer Club Box to highlight bean-to-bar producers from British Columbia, supporting the local makers in the region where MILOU is based.
  • Profits from all American-made bars and the “BC Coast Crafted” box will be donated to Apathy is Boring, a Canadian non-partisan charity dedicated to youth civic engagement, democratic participation, and media literacy.

This is not about turning inward—it’s about recognizing that supporting local doesn’t mean shutting out the world. It means strengthening the foundation that allows us to stay connected to it. MILOU will always be a space for those who love to explore. But right now, we invite you to explore what’s close to home, to invest in the makers around us, and to be part of something that strengthens both our local and global connections.
