Belvie Black Pearl of the Mekong 85%

Cocoa Origin: Vietnam
Producer Country: Vietnam
Weight: 80 g

Crafted from beans of a single variety and plantation, this limited-production bar is aptly named the "Black Pearl" for its extraordinary nature. The texture is sublime, offering a firm bite that slowly melts to satisfaction. Despite its dark composition (85% cocoa), it surprises with a bright and lively acidity, complemented by a hint of earthy porcini. Rich and decadent notes of fudge, espresso, and chocolate liqueur complete this exceptional tasting experience.

Belvie Black Pearl of the Mekong 85%

This husband and wife team blends Belgian chocolate-making techniques with locally sourced Vietnamese Trinitario beans. It's all about terroir with Belvie; they ferment and dry the beans on the small farms where they're grown - none of which are far from their production facility in Ho Chi Minh - and they even use Vietnamese cocoa butter! Another thing I love about Belvie is their origins; Jannie and Marc started their chocolate-making journey at home, using cocoa trees growing outside their front door and experimenting in their kitchen. Adding to their charm, their labels feature traditional Vietnamese silk paintings showcasing the unique geography of each bar's region, further emphasizing their commitment to local heritage.

Ben Tre Province, situated in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, is a region steeped in history and natural beauty. Just 85 kilometres southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, it played a significant role in Vietnam's past, witnessing the Viet Minh's victory over the French in 1867 and enduring damage during the Tet Offensive in the 1960s. The province boasts a lush green landscape dotted with coconut groves and rice paddies, especially vibrant during the rainy season that runs from May to November. The area's fertile land, flat terrain (only 5 meters above sea level), and network of rivers and canals, makes it a hub of agricultural activity. It was actually the birthplace of cacao cultivation in Vietnam!
