In 2011 the Kerta Semaya Samaniya (KSS) farmer cooperative grew the first organic certified cacao in South-East Asia. They continue to farm organically using an agroforestry system that combines multiple crops such as fruits, coffee and vegetables. The beans come from Jembrana on the island of Bali and seem to have absorbed the region's natural beauty and exoticism, offering insanely floral aromatics as well as striking flavours of tangerine, yuzu, guava, and flowers. Combined with the Dutch cow milk it takes on a creamy melt, mellow sweetness and notes of Portuguese custard tart. Simply amazing.

Heinde & Verre, meaning "near and far," pays homage to the Dutch culinary tradition of sourcing ingredients worldwide and combining them with local customs, perfectly reflecting Milou’s belief in the synergy of global and local economies. The two guys behind the name, Jan-Willem & Ewald, are serious chocolate geeks and have developed several in-house techniques that make their bars standout: slow food level stuff like stone grinding for up to three days, aging their chocolate mass, sorting beans by hand, and split-roasting single origin beans into multiple batches, each receiving a unique roast profile, and then blending back together by taste. They use only traceable ingredients and work with trusted single estates and cooperatives. Their facility is a carbon-free, fully electric factory powered and heated by 100% Dutch green wind energy. And as if that wasn’t enough to love about them, just wait until you see the cleverness of their packaging, which includes kraft paper pouches with double airtight seal to protect against odors, light, humidity, and oxidation. The outside sticker states the name, farmer, and origin region, while unfolding the box reveals the H&D philosophy, a map showing ingredients and their origin, and a QR code linking to the story, tasting notes, farmer's photos, and other details of each bar, as well as nutritional value in four languages. As if that’s not good enough, each box comes with not one but two bars!
Shop More Heinde & VerreBali is an island province of Indonesia, spanning approximately 153 km east/west and 112 km north/south. The country’s main tourist destination, tourism-related businesses make up 80% of the local economy. Bali is the only Hindu-majority province in Indonesia and is home to a confederation of kingdoms composed of 10 traditional royal Balinese houses, each ruling a specific geographic area. These royal houses, successors of the Bali Kingdom, are not recognized by the Indonesian government despite predating Dutch colonization. Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species, especially fish and turtles. Located just 8 degrees south of the equator, Bali enjoys a fairly even climate
year-round, with an average temperature of around 30°C and humidity levels of about 85%. In addition to white and black sand beaches, Bali is home to mountains that peak well over 2,000 meters in elevation and active volcanoes, the highest being Mount Agung (3,031 m), which is rated one of the world's most likely sites for a massive eruption within the next 100 years. Bali's volcanic nature contributes to its exceptional fertility, and its tall mountain ranges provide the high rainfall to support a highly productive agriculture sector.
