Esmeraldas province is located at the southern tip of the Chocó, one of the world's most threatened and least known rainforests. These 100% Arriba beans, grown by Indiginous Chachi communities, come from the Mache-Chindul Ecological Reserve, a mountainous coastal cloud forest in Ecuador. This reserve nourishes the region's major rivers and is home to remarkably high biodiversity. The bar itself is equally impressive, showcasing an almond flavour that closely resembles actual almonds rather than highly processed almond milk (which makes sense, as it's made with ground almonds, not milk). That said, with its perfect texture and nutty, deliciously sweet taste reminiscent of Ferrero Rocher and other Christmas chocolates, it could easily pass for a "normal" milk bar.

Original Beans, like me, aims to create a food culture that regenerates our world and encourages people to think more about what they eat. Since 2008, they have ventured into remote rainforests to source some of the world's rarest (and fairest) cacao beans. By many standards, including the Be Slavery Free organization's "Chocolate Scorecard," they lead the industry in traceability, transparency, and living income, ranking as the #1 most sustainable chocolate company globally. The company's founder, Philipp, left his job at the United Nations with the goal of creating one of the world's first climate-positive companies and, true to his word, Original Beans was the first chocolate maker to pledge planting one tree for every bar sold, use compostable foil, and become carbon neutral. Their dedication to the environment extends to the communities they work with and to the delicious quality of their products, which often finds its way into Michelin-starred restaurants and premier hotels. This isn't surprising given the superior quality of their raw ingredients: wild and foraged cocoa, Swiss dairy milk, and "raw" cane sugar that has not been carbonated or decolorized.
Shop More Original BeansEsmeraldas is a province in northwestern Ecuador, bordering the Pacific Ocean and western Colombia. Renowned for its beaches, pristine forests, seafood, and vibrant indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian culture - Esmeraldas' population is predominantly Mestizo and Afro-Ecuadorian - the region attracts a lot of tourism. In rural areas, agriculture is the primary livelihood, with crops like coffee, bananas, and tobacco. The capital city, also named Esmeraldas, is the terminus of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline from the northeastern oil fields, with local industries focused on manufacturing, timber, chemicals, and oil. As result, environmental concerns have risen, especially around management of the Gran Chaco, South America's second-largest forest. Esmeraldas is also known throughout Latin America for its significant contribution of players to the Ecuador national football team.
