Karkar Island, situated off the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea, is, in reality, a colossal volcano spanning 60 miles across and visible from over 50 miles away. Its terrain, marked by fertile soil formed from volcanic andesitic lava, nurtures a variety of crops such as cocoa, coconut, betel-nut, mustard plant, and lime. Karkar is a botanical wonderland, home to hundreds of orchid species that paint the landscape with vibrant colors. Its 70,000 inhabitants are connected by a single road that encircles the entire island, and access to/from the island is limited to a six-hour boat journey. This boat, powered by coconut, showcases the island's resourceful use of its main crop.
