Esmeraldas province is located at the southern tip of the Chocó, one of the world's most threatened and least known rainforests. These 100% Arriba beans, grown by Indiginous Chachi communities, come from the Mache-Chindul Ecological Reserve, a mountainous coastal cloud forest in Ecuador. This reserve nourishes the region's major rivers and is home to remarkably high biodiversity. The bar itself is equally impressive, showcasing an almond flavour that closely resembles actual almonds rather than highly processed almond milk (which makes sense, as it's made with ground almonds, not milk). That said, with its perfect texture and nutty, deliciously sweet taste reminiscent of Ferrero Rocher and other Christmas chocolates, it could easily pass for a "normal" milk bar.

In 2011 the Kerta Semaya Samaniya (KSS) farmer cooperative grew the first organic certified cacao in South-East Asia. They continue to farm organically using an agroforestry system that combines multiple crops such as fruits, coffee and vegetables. The beans come from Jembrana on the island of Bali and seem to have absorbed the region's natural beauty and exoticism, offering insanely floral aromatics. There's no way of knowing that this proprietary milk alternative (made from oats, coconut, banana, rice, and calcium) isn't the real thing. It has lovely flavours of vanilla, banana, biscuit, baking spices, and honeycomb that compliment the chocolate's expressive tropical, citrusy, and floral characteristics, allowing them to shine too. It also has the perfect texture, complete with creamy melt and mellow sweetness.

This vegan milk bar combines cashew nuts from Burkina Faso with heirloom Nacional Arriba cocoa grown in the Machu Chindal forest reserve in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Eighteen farmers from the village of Mono Bravo grow, harvest, ferment and dry the beans under the guidance of Original Beans. The cocoa is far more pronounced than the cashews — the bar, akin to its packaging, features a very dark colour and has a matching roasty profile unusual for a 'milk' bar. The flavour of cashew isn't as prominent as oats or almonds tend to be, but the nuts impart a premium texture that is divinely creamy, melding with the chocolate to create a fudge-like indulgence.
